Just like you inherit your eye color, hair color, and other traits, you also inherit your foot type from your parents. If your mom has bunions, that doesn’t necessarily mean you will also have bunions or be born with them, but if you have a foot structure similar to your mother’s, then you may eventually develop a bunion.
If your family has a history of serious foot problems, it is best to identify them at an early age to avoid those same problems later in life. At our office, we treat children as young as 2 or 3 when we know that there is a family history of flat feet or other structural conditions, so we can help their foot structure develop properly, typically with the use of an orthotic device.
If you have flat feet and you notice that your child has feet that look JUST like yours, don’t assume that they will grow out of it, as many pediatricians advise, because if that was the case then you wouldn’t have flat feet as an adult! We are always here to help you put your best foot forward, so please give us a call to schedule an appointment if you have any other questions or concerns about your feet!
