If your child's heel pain hasn't let up after a few days or a week, it is best to get in and see a specialist.  While heel pain in children is most often due to apophysitis (inflammation of a growth plate), there are a few other causes which should be explored if the heel pain just isn't improving at home.  Some of these causes include tendinitis and also cysts within the heel bone, which can be seen on x-ray.  Another huge benefit to seeing a podiatrist is that we can make an experienced assessment that can determine if there is a need for an immobilization device (such as a boot or brace) or if more structured therapy is necessary beyond what you've been doing at home.
