A hammertoe is a toe that is contracted or curled downward. The word hammertoe is used as the bend in the toe typically occurs at the first joint past the ball of the foot and typically the other joint within the toe is straight, creating a hammer looking deformity. The term hammertoe is sometimes used for other curling deformities of the toes that occur at different joints within the toe, however, to be exact these other types of curly toes have their own special names. Mallet toe is the term used to describe a toe that is contracted at the joint farthest from the foot and claw tow describes the deformity when both joints within the toe are contracted.
