Juvenile bunions are those which develop at younger ages, often before a child's foot is fully grown. Consideration of surgery needs to be delayed until closure of growth plates in the foot as much as possible. A bunion that develops so early in life is much more likely to recur after surgery and to heal properly the growth plates should be closed prior to surgery.

Alternative shoes as well as custom orthotics and strapping can sometime assist in pain and discomfort associated with the bunions until a patient is ready to undergo surgery.
