After a foot or ankle injury, you may be wondering - did I fracture it? There are a few things to clue us in to whether a severe injury has occurred, though these are only signs and sometimes you or your doctor will be surprised to know the true answer.
After an injury such as twisting your ankle, these are a few things that can indicate a fracture:
1. Severe swelling
2. Bruising, especially widespread to the affected limb
3. Inability to put weight on the injured side
The disclaimer here is that not all of these signs will be present when there is a fracture. Also, sometimes all of these signs are present but there is no fracture. These are indicators of a serious injury - even in the absence of a fracture and so an evaluation and quick set of x-rays helps to know for sure!
