Are bunions caused by pointy shoes?

Although shoes with a narrow toe box and may be pointed at the end may contribute to a bunion formation, it is certainly not the main cause.  Most people, both men and women, who have a bunion deformity are predisposed towards bunions due to their genetics, the shape of their bones, and the structure of their feet.  The structure of the foot along with muscle impbalances may cause pronation, or flattening of the foot, which in turn causes the foot to roll inward.  This places pressure on the big toe joint, causing the bog toe to bend inwards and towrds the 2nd toe, develping a bunion over time. This is why it is important to have your feet checked if you have the slightest suspicion of a bunion formation, because the doctors at Prairie Path Foot and Ankle Clinic can help come up with ways of decreasing the progression of the deformity, with custom or semi custom orthotics.  Call and make an appointment today with our doctors and find out how.
