Device in Question: Metal wires put through one side of the leg or foot to the other attached to rings around the foot and ankle
Answer: Sometimes referred to as “cage fixators” this is a real set-up used in very extreme cases of surgery to correct the foot and ankle. The technical term for this device is an external fixator. These are used primarily when there is major foot reconstruction performed or after traumatic injuries when putting a cast on is not a good option. This treatment allows for interval adjustments to slowly correct foot position and in cases of trauma allows a form of “weight bearing” that does not place pressure on the bottom of the foot, but rather the external fixator device.
