Having worn orthotics since I was a teenager AND prescribing them for over 12 years, I have seen many mistakes made by orthotic wearers (as well as made them myself). Follow these tips to help your orthotics work optimally as well as avoid future foot pain.

#1-Wear shoes that work well with your orthotics.

No they won't work in high heels or flip flops!!

#2- Bring your orthotics with you whenever you purchase a new pair of shoes. Often it looks like they will fit and then when you get the shoes home they don't. Save yourself the time and frustration!

#3- Wear socks or stockings similar to those that you plan on wearing when you shop for new shoes.

#4- Return as directed for your 3 week follow-up evaluation of the functioning of your orthotics. This is important for making certain that your feet and orthotics are functioning properly together. We check your foot for irritations, blisters and signs of abnormal wear which can lead to bigger problems if not caught early.

#5- Orthotics squeaking? Put baby powder between your shoe and orthotic. Squeaking gone.

#6- Keep your orthotics clean. Either wash them with soap and water monthly or spray them with clean sweep shoe spray weekly. This helps prevent build up of bacteria and fungus and most importantly stops them from being stinky!

#7- Just like eye glasses the orthotics need a yearly check up. Often we can catch problems before they become problems simply with a yearly check up. While orthotics usually last 2-4 years it isn't unusual for very active people to replace them yearly.
