At Prairie Path Foot and Ankle Clinic we often see patients with thick nails, sometimes these nails have a fungal infection and sometimes they are just dystrophic (Fancy term for THICK) nails. Many patients are embarassed by their nails and want to be able to wear their sandals, get a pedicure and show off their toes.
The first thing we do on a visit to the office is a nail biopsy. This is a quick, painless procedure that can be done in the office. This sample is then sent to a specialized laboratory where they determine if the nail does in face have a fungal infection.
If nails are fungal, we have many treatment options. However, what do you do when the nail is just thick with no fungus? This is when we use Kera-Nail Gel. This is a softening gel that can be used on your nails once-twice daily to decrease the thickness and bulk. It will also soften your nails and make them easier to trim and maintain.
Many patients are embarassed by their nails and want to be able to wear their cute sandals, get a pedicure and go barefoot (especially in the summer!). Eventhough in the cold of January it seems summer will never come, its important to start treatment for your nails right away as most treatments rely on the nails growing out which can take 6-9 months. So don't spend another summer hiding your toes! Come and see one of our qualified doctors today!!
