Q
What are these thick nails?

A

Thick toenails are caused by a couple of conditions.  One of the most common causes of thick toenails is a fungal infection, referred to as onychomycosis.  This condition can occur in any person, but it is more common in a couple populations.  Fungus is an opportunistic micro-organism and lingers in moist dark environments, such as sweaty shoes.  Therefore, people whose feet tend to sweat more and especially those with a history of Athlete’s foot are more prone to developing onychomycosis.  The other most common cause of thick toenails is damaged nail growth cells.
