If your child has flat feet, there are a few ways this can be treated.  While physical therapy, rest and icing can be the initial treatment for flat feet that are painful - orthotics are the way to support the foot structure and prevent future deformities and conditions.  A UCBL type of orthotics is one which has a very deep heel support, a good arch to support the middle of the foot and a lateral wall which prevents the foot from turning out.  The name "UCBL" was created because of where this device was initially created - The University of California Biomechanics Laboratory.
